About Us

Westminster Skills Centre was founded in 2019 by a group of people who have worked in and around Westminster for decades. From personal experience we know how complex Westminster can be, and also how little high-quality training exists to explain how things really work.

Our mission is to provide outstanding development opportunities for staff and politicians from all political parties, as well for those working in business and civil society. We believe this increased understanding will ultimately lead to more effective decision-making.

We offer a range of one day and half-day courses, many of which are designed to explain how Parliament works, how legislation is passed and how to run an effective political campaign.

We also offer courses on media management, the art of effective speech-writing and using social media as a campaigning tool.

Our modules have been designed by our large network of experienced trainers, all of whom are experts in their respective fields from across the political spectrum.

Parliament: A guide for newly elected MPs

For newly elected MPs, arriving in the Commons is sure to be exhilarating, but may also be daunting. New MPs are often surprised to find no formal training or advice offered, and are left to find their own way around Parliament’s labyrinthine rules and customs.

How to be an effective caseworker

Being an MP's caseworker is one of the most rewarding and impactful jobs in politics. But there is little formal training available to help you help constituents.

A guide to media and communications

If you work with the media, there are a wealth of unwritten rules you need to know in order to ensure your message cuts through. Hear from our team of senior journalists how the press really works and how to avoid making mistakes that reporters can pounce on.

Writing for impact

Does your job require you to be a master wordsmith? Do you want to be able to write speeches that the audience will still be thinking about weeks later? Perhaps you need to produce regular and thought provoking blogs or op-eds to get your message out there? If you need to use excellent writing skills in order for your work to have an impact, then this is the course for you.

Guide to Parliament for Westminster staffers

Are you a Parliamentary staffer, working for a politician? This comprehensive training will help you to understand the often confusing world of Parliament and tell you everything you need to know about your workplace.

How to change the law - influencing legislation

If you want to change the law there are many levers you can pull. This course will help you understand how to navigate the legislative process, so you can maximise your chances of securing the changes you want.

How to stand for public office

If you are an aspiring politician, wanting to represent people at a local or national level, this course can help you maximise your chances of selection and election.

Want something different?

We can offer bespoke training courses for you or your organisation. Whether you want us to provide the training venue or come to you, just get in touch and we will create a plan that covers exactly what

you need.

What people say...

"I wish I had this training when I first started working in Parliament! They distilled decades of experience to the most useful bits."
